Lois Jovanovic, M.D.

Dr. Lois Jovanovic is Director of the Sansum Research Institute in Santa Barbara, California. She is a renowned expert in the clinical management of diabetes. The author of well over 250 publications, she has made fundamental contributions to the understanding of the physiology and management of diabetic pregnancies. She has also distinguished herself by her contributions to the care of diabetic women in general. Her sensitivity to the special needs of the woman patient with type II diabetes has resulted in numerous publications directed to practitioners.

She has been a key participant in the DCCT program. Her clinical facility at the Sansum Clinic covers 4000 square feet. There are four clinical trials cooordinators. She is director of the Diabetes and Endocrine Clinic of Santa Barbara County Health Care Services. There are 14,000 diabetic patients cared for by this service, about 85% Hispanic. Dr. Jovanovic communicates with her patients in Spanish.

Dr. Jovanovic has a remarkable ability to communicate with her patients. This is at least partially due to her ability to place difficult concepts in everyday, easily understandable language. That ability is manifest in the considerable number of books, pamphlets, and media presentations she has authored for the lay public. This ability translates in her expert management of her patients. She has developed tools to aid in the instruction of illiterate patients.

Dr. Jovanonovic has been a lead researcher on the development of many of the new oral hypoglycemics currently used in diabetes care.
