Paresh Dandona, M.D.

Dr. Paresh Dandona is Chief of Endocrinology at the State University of New York at Buffalo. He had a distinguished career in English medicine before crossing the Atlantic. A former Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, he went on to spend many years in the British medical care system, eventually heading the Diabetes Service at the Royal Hospital and School of Medicine in Sheffield. He came to the United States in 1991 to assume his present role and set up the Diabetes-Endocrinology Center of Western New York which he directs.. . His broad experience in both the British and the American health care systems has given him a unique perspective on health delivery for diabetic patients.

Dr. Dandona has been a prolific author, contributing over 300 publications to the medical literature. He is an expert in the treatment of insulin resistance and has been involved in all the major trials of thiazolidinediones. He has made fundamental contributions to the understanding of vascular reactivity changes in diabetes. His work on endothelial mechanisms has led to better appreciation of the critical role of the vascular lining in the development of diabetic complications

As a dedicated teacher, Dr. Dandona has mentored many of the present day leaders in diabetes health care and research. He enjoys having them return to speak at the educational symposia he organizes on the local and national level.
